Paulo Machado was born and raised on Pico island, growing up in close connection with the culture of vineyards and wine.
His family background and fascination for vitiviniculture led him to want to improve his knowledge, so he studied Agricultural Engineering at the Azores University and later completed a post-graduate course in Enology at the School of Biotechnology of the Catholic University in Porto.
Professionally, he has taught in regular and professional schools as a Viticulture and Enology trainer. He has held several technical positions, contributing decisively to the revitalization of the wine industry in Azores. At the same time he developed a family project, Insula Vinus, related to his great passion, viticulture and wine production, where he always tried to do well and differently, complementing his knowledge in other areas.

He was part of large scale projects, such as Azores Wine Company, a project that revolutionized the Azorean wine industry, and established partnerships with renowned national winemakers aiming the production of sparkling and liquored wines.
Experimentation with red grape varieties has always been one of his goals, installing several parcels with grape varieties that date back to the early days of Azorean settlement. Recently he took over the winemaking of Adega e Cooperativa Agrícola from Graciosa Island, contributing to the re-launch of exceptional white wines. In 2018 he embraced the viticulture and enology of this project "A Cerca dos Frades", which is currently one of the most prominent and nationally recognized Azorean wine projects.
